Isobel Radford Dodd gave another exhibition of her Fencing prowess as she turned in another impressive performance at the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon Junior World Championships in Poland on Thursday afternoon.
The 20-year-old had qualified for the Women’s Individual Semi-finals with a superb performance in Tuesday’s Qualification in Zielona Gora and will come away from these championships with great pride and focus as she finished comfortably within the top 30 in the world.
However with the demanding new Pentathlon format in place for the first time at this year’s Junior Worlds, just 18 athletes made it safely through Thursday to qualify for the weekend’s Women’s Final.
Radford Dodd has enjoyed a breakout season as she made her Senior World Cup and World Championships debuts and her skills on the piste have been evident throughout. Thursday was no different as the Trinity College student racked up 20 victories in the Fencing Ranking Round and added another two points in the Bonus Round to finish joint fourth overall in the 36-strong Semi-final field.
Action moved next to the pool and Radford Dodd was comfortably within the top ten in her Semi-final B group, finishing the Swimming discipline in a time of 2:19.14, slightly slower than her superb swim in Tuesday’s Qualification.
In a hugely talented field, the culminating Laser Run proved a gruelling affair. Radford Dodd completed the combined discipline in 13:02.20 to hit an overall score of 1017 points leaving her in 26th place overall and outside the qualifying places.
Radford Dodd still has business to attend to in Sunday’s Mixed Relay where she will team up with fellow 20-year-old Ben Makin.
Makin is next up in solo action however after his brilliant debut in Irish colours on Wednesday qualified him for Friday’s Men’s Individual Semi-finals in Zielona Gora. Makin and Radford Dodd are part of a five-strong Ireland team at these championships.
The UIPM 2022 Pentathlon Junior World Championships run from October 2-9 in Zielona Gora, Poland. For competition updates visit the UIPM website or download the UIPM Central app.
