Sive Brassil battled gamely on a gruelling semi-finals day at the UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships in Alexandria but her efforts fell short of securing a place in Saturday’s final.
Brassil was in the second of two semi-final groups of 18 competitors with just half the field making it through to Saturday’s final under Modern Pentathlon’s demanding New Format, which was making its World Championships debut in Egypt with a star-studded field gathered for the highlight event of the UIPM calendar.
Brassil was immediately somewhat on the back foot as she recorded 15 victories in a steady if unspectacular performance in the Fencing Ranking Round, which took place Thursday evening. She was frustratingly unable to add to that tally when the Fencing Bonus Round kicked off Friday’s penultimate stage, the in-form Italian Elena Micheli leading the way in the discipline.
However the 28-year-old Galway athlete’s battling qualities have so often been seen when competition moves from the piste to the pool and that was again the case Friday as Brassil came in 12th fastest in her group in a time of 2:17.62 but three seconds off her time from Wednesday’s qualification round. Micheli was fastest with Hungarian star Michelle Gulyas not far behind the Italian.
On another cloudless day when temperatures in Alexandria climbed into the 30s, the Laser Run promised to be an energy-sapping affair and so it proved. Brassil however dug in and completed the combined a time of 12:11.90, which was almost eight seconds quicker than that which she recorded two days earlier in the previous round. It left her with a total of 1044 points which wasn’t enough to secure progress to the final but did assure her of another top-30 finish at a World Championships.
Twelve countries will be represented in Saturday’s decider with world No.1 Elodie Clouvel of France having safely progressed top of the pile.
Brassil’s elimination brings Irish interest in Alexandria to an end but it has been a productive championships for the county with two young competitors joining Brassil and making their debuts on the elite stage when 20-year-olds Isobel Radford-Dodd and Hanna D’Aughton competed in Wednesday’s qualification.
The UIPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships are taking place in Alexandria, Egypt from July 24th to 31st. The Women’s and Men’s individual finals take place Saturday, July 30th.
